Program Overview
Thank you for your interest in the Aghaaz Fellowships Program.
The Aghaaz Fellowship, meaning “rebirth” in Dari, is crafted to empower Afghan women who have been evacuated through collaborations with organizations experienced in women’s leadership, peace and security, human rights, education, entrepreneurship, governance, and legal frameworks.
Our initiative partners with universities, civil society groups, and think-tanks in Washington D.C. to leverage their extensive expertise and resources, aiming to provide impactful fellowship opportunities for selected participants.
Applications, including two reference letters, must be submitted by August 10th.
Fellowship Criteria
Eligibility Requirements:
- Afghan women who have been evacuated to the U.S., with a focus on those evacuated by Vital Voices Global Partnership.
- A strong commitment to advancing women’s rights, including leadership, entrepreneurship, and human rights.
- Demonstrated interest in women’s empowerment, capacity building, diaspora organizing, policy, and resettlement support.
- Presence in the U.S. is a priority.
- Ability to work collaboratively with organizations and other fellows.
- Financial stability will be considered, but financial need alone will not disqualify an applicant.
- Proficiency in English.
- At least 18 years old.
- Commitment to Vital Voices’ principles of innovative, collaborative leadership with a strong community connection and a mission-driven approach.
Application Process
- Submit a completed application including a personal statement, resume/CV, and at least two recommendation letters.
- The personal statement should reflect the applicant’s alignment with the fellowship’s goals and a passion for women’s rights and leadership.
- Recommendation letters should be from individuals who can attest to the applicant’s qualifications and commitment.
Fellowship Selection
- Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel from Vital Voices’ Afghanistan portfolio based on eligibility and personal statements.
- The selection committee will include representatives from partner organizations and Afghan experts.
- Shortlisted candidates may be interviewed to evaluate their commitment and suitability for the program.
Fellowship Components
- Fellows will undertake placements at NGOs, think-tanks, and universities in Washington D.C. with programs aligned with their objectives.
- Ongoing mentorship and support will be provided, including regular progress check-ins and networking opportunities.
- Fellows will be encouraged to share their experiences and insights through speaking engagements, articles, or other means to advance the program’s goals.
Partner Organizations
- Counterpart International: Offers global capacity-building and development programs with a focus on governance, civil society, and community resilience, partnering with local organizations for sustainable development.
- Afghan American Foundation: Provides educational and vocational programs for Afghan-Americans and those in Afghanistan, facilitates community development, and supports refugees and immigrants.
- Women for Afghan Women (WAW): Advocates for women’s rights in Afghanistan, operates shelters, and offers education, vocational training, and healthcare services.
- Afghan American Women’s Association: Promotes cultural preservation and community engagement among Afghan-American women, provides social services and advocacy support, and empowers women’s leadership.
- Mina’s List: Supports women’s political participation and leadership globally, offering training and support to women from conflict-affected regions.
